📊 How To Read A Crypto Chart
From complete beginner to confident trader — everything explained simply with real examples.
01
The Basics — What Are You Looking At?
Understanding the chart before anything else
📐
The Two Axes
Every price chart has two axes. The vertical axis (Y) shows the price in USD — higher up means a higher price. The horizontal axis (X) shows time — further right means more recent. Where price was at any moment is shown as a point (or candle) on the chart at the intersection of those two values.
Timeframes
A timeframe determines how much history you see and how each candle is grouped. On the 1D chart, each candle = 5 minutes. On the 1Y chart, each candle = one full day. Longer timeframes show the bigger picture. Shorter ones show fine detail.

Rule of thumb: Always check the weekly/monthly chart before making decisions on a short-term chart.
📈
Line vs Candlestick Chart
A line chart connects only the closing price of each period — it's clean and easy to read the overall trend. A candlestick chart shows four prices per period (open, high, low, close) giving you far more information about what happened during that period. Most traders prefer candlesticks.
02
Candlestick Charts — Reading Every Candle
Each candle tells a complete story of that time period
High Open Close Low
🟢 Bullish Candle
Price went UP — Close > Open
High Close Open Low
🔴 Bearish Candle
Price went DOWN — Close < Open
BodyThe thick rectangle. Shows the range between Open and Close prices.
WicksThe thin lines above and below the body. Show the highest and lowest prices reached that period, even if briefly.
Long wick upSellers pushed price back down — potential rejection of higher prices.
Long wick downBuyers pushed price back up — potential rejection of lower prices (strong support).
Doji candleOpen and close are nearly the same (very thin body). Shows indecision — neither buyers nor sellers won.
03
Identifying Trends
The most important skill in chart reading
📈
Uptrend
Higher Highs (HH) + Higher Lows (HL)

Each peak is higher than the last peak. Each dip is higher than the last dip. Price is making a staircase pattern upward.

What to do: Look for buying opportunities on dips to the previous higher low. The trend is your friend.
📉
Downtrend
Lower Highs (LH) + Lower Lows (LL)

Each rally fails at a lower level. Each dip goes lower than the previous dip. Price is making a staircase pattern downward.

What to do: Avoid buying. Wait for a trend reversal signal — a higher high breaking the pattern — before entering long.
➡️
Sideways / Range
Price bouncing between two levels

No clear direction. Price keeps hitting the same ceiling (resistance) and the same floor (support) without breaking out.

What to do: Buy near support, sell near resistance — OR wait for a breakout in either direction with high volume before committing.
04
Support & Resistance
Price has memory — these levels are where battles happen
R S bounce bounce reject reject Support = floor (buyers step in here) Resistance = ceiling (sellers appear here)
💡
Role Reversal
This is crucial: when resistance is broken, it often becomes the new support. And when support breaks, it often becomes the new resistance. Price has "memory" — old battlegrounds become reference points for future price action.
🎯
How to Find Levels
Look for price areas that have been tested multiple times. Round numbers ($50,000, $100,000) often act as psychological levels. Previous all-time highs are major resistance. Areas with long wicks (rejection) mark strong levels. Use the H-Line tool in Token-Tokens to mark them!
05
Volume — The Fuel Behind Price
Confirms whether a move is real or fake
🔥
High Volume + Up Move
Strong buying interest. Real demand. Move is likely to continue. Most bullish signal.
🩸
High Volume + Down Move
Strong selling pressure. Real panic or distribution. Decline likely continues. Most bearish signal.
⚠️
Low Volume + Up Move
Weak rally. Not many participants. Could be a "fakeout" that reverses quickly. Don't trust it.
🤔
Low Volume + Down Move
Weak selling. May just be lack of buyers, not active dumping. Often resolves sideways. Neutral signal.
💡 Volume Spike on Breakout — when price breaks above resistance and volume is unusually high, that's one of the most reliable signals in all of crypto. The move has conviction behind it.
06
Technical Indicators
Mathematical tools that help interpret price action
〰️ Moving Average (MA)

Calculates the average closing price over a set number of periods. Smooths out the noise and reveals the true underlying trend direction.

▲ Price above MA = bullish trend
▼ Price below MA = bearish trend
✨ Fast MA crosses above slow MA = Golden Cross (major buy signal)
💀 Fast MA crosses below slow MA = Death Cross (major sell signal)
〰️ EMA (Exponential MA)

Like MA but gives more weight to recent prices — it reacts faster to price changes, making it better for catching trend shifts early before they become obvious.

▲ Price above EMA50 = confirmed uptrend
▼ Price below EMA50 = confirmed downtrend
⚡ EMA reacts faster than MA — better for volatile markets
🌡 RSI — Relative Strength Index

Measures momentum on a 0–100 scale. Shows how fast price has been moving and whether the asset is statistically stretched in either direction.

🔴 RSI above 70 = Overbought — may pull back soon
🟢 RSI below 30 = Oversold — may bounce soon
⚡ RSI Divergence: price makes new high but RSI doesn't = warning, trend weakening
⚡ MACD

Shows momentum shifts using two EMAs. The gap between them (the histogram) shows how strong the current momentum is. Crossovers generate signals.

▲ MACD line crosses above signal = bullish momentum building
▼ MACD line crosses below signal = bearish momentum building
📊 Shrinking histogram = trend is losing steam, reversal possible
📐 Bollinger Bands

Three lines: a center MA with upper/lower bands set 2 standard deviations apart. The bands expand in volatile markets and contract in calm ones.

⬆ Price touches upper band = potentially overbought
⬇ Price touches lower band = potentially oversold
🎯 Band Squeeze: bands very tight = big move incoming (direction unknown)
💧 VWAP

Volume Weighted Average Price — the average price paid, weighted by how much was traded at each level. Used by institutional and professional traders as a key benchmark.

▲ Price above VWAP = bulls in control intraday
▼ Price below VWAP = bears in control intraday
🏛 Institutions often buy dips to VWAP and sell rallies above it
07
Chart Patterns
Recurring shapes that traders use to anticipate the next move
Higher Highs & Higher Lows
⬆ Uptrend Channel
Series of HH+HL. Buy the dips. Exit if a HL is broken.
Lower Highs & Lower Lows
⬇ Downtrend Channel
Series of LH+LL. Stay out or short. Exit when a LH is broken.
Two peaks at same level
⛰⛰ Double Top
Two highs at the same level = bearish reversal. Price likely drops after the second peak.
Two lows at same level
🏔🏔 Double Bottom
Two lows at the same level = bullish reversal. Price likely rises after the second bounce.
Consolidation → Breakout
📐 Flag / Pennant
Strong move (pole), then tight consolidation (flag), then breakout in same direction. Continuation pattern.
Center shoulder - head - shoulder
👤 Head & Shoulders
Left shoulder, higher head, lower right shoulder. Classic reversal. Break of neckline = strong sell signal.
08
Fibonacci Retracement
Ancient math that markets seem to respect
0%The starting high — absolute top of the move
23.6%Shallow retracement. Common in strong uptrends. Weak pullback level.
38.2%Moderate retracement. Good entry zone in bull markets.
50%Psychological midpoint. Not technically Fibonacci but widely watched.
61.8% ✨The Golden Ratio — the most important level. Price bounces here very often.
78.6%Deep retracement. Last line of defense before full retracement to start.
100%The starting low — full retracement back to origin
1Find a significant swing low (bottom of a major move down)
2Find the corresponding swing high (top of the move up)
3Click 🌀 Fib in Token-Tokens and click those two points
4Watch how price reacts at each level during pullbacks
💡 The 61.8% level (the Golden Ratio) is where price bounces most often. When combined with a support level or MA at the same price, it becomes an extremely powerful zone.

Live Analysis Checklist
Run through this every time you open a chart
📊 Big Picture First
Zoom out to MAX or 1Y. Is the overall trend up, down, or sideways? Never trade against the big picture.
Find key support and resistance. Where has price bounced or rejected multiple times? Mark them with H-Line.
Check the Fear & Greed Index. Extreme Fear (<20) = potential buy zone. Extreme Greed (>80) = be cautious.
📈 Trend & Structure
Is price above MA20 and EMA50? Both above = strong uptrend. Both below = downtrend. Mixed = neutral.
Is price making higher highs and higher lows? This is the definition of an uptrend — verify it visually.
Any pattern recognition labels on the chart? Golden Cross, Double Bottom = bullish. Death Cross, Double Top = bearish.
⚡ Momentum & Volume
RSI reading? Above 70 = overbought (caution). Below 30 = oversold (opportunity). 40-60 = neutral momentum.
MACD crossover direction? Cross up = bullish momentum building. Cross down = bearish momentum building.
Is volume confirming the move? Big price move on low volume = suspect. Big move on high volume = real.
🕯 Candle & Entry
What do the recent candles look like? Long wicks = rejection. Doji = indecision. Strong bodies = conviction.
Are Bollinger Bands squeezing? Very tight bands = big move coming soon. Watch for the breakout direction.
Check Fibonacci levels. Is price sitting at a 38.2%, 50%, or 61.8% retracement? These are high-probability entry zones.
